BIODEGRADABLE PAPER BAGS

Biodegradable paper bag
The second life of paper bags

A bit 'blurred by the commercial success of bioplastics, the function of paper bags in the world of packaging needed a raise.
A trial sought to show that the bags are biodegradable and compostable under the laws, and that can be used for the collection of waste damp.

That paper is biodegradable and compostable material is not in itself a challenge given by, yet when we talk
technical requirements of packaging and bags cartasecondo European directives, it is necessary to validate certain statements with experimental data. Comieco, the Consortium National Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose-based packaging, conducted in 2008 a trial on paper bags for shopping, in order to confirm the biodegradability Disintegrability and verify their compliance with the requirements expressed in standard EN 13432 -2000. For technical support and scientific experimentation, the Consortium has used laboratory of the Stazione Sperimentale pulp and paper cartons (SCCP) specializing in testing for the paper industry, and the Italian Composters Consortium (CIC), which attests compostability materials and the quality of the composted soil products (Decree 217/06).

European directives in terms of packaging, they state that at the end of life (post-consumer packaging) can not be released into the environment as such, but must be recycled as material, or burned for energy or composted. For some years the market are paper bags to collect the wet waste allowed, but this area has since been largely replaced by that of bio-plastics (biodegradable polymers derived from plant sources). It seemed therefore appropriate to recall that even the paper bags are certified materials regarding the biodegradability Disintegrability. "

"With this trial," says Werner Zanardi, CIC's technical, "we have verified that the paper bags for food (bread, fruit) and shoppers to take away the goods available at all outlets can be used over their conventional function of containers of merchandise, to collect the wet fraction of household waste to be delivered at the composting plant. Depends on the choices of the Administration
if local citizens to provide paper bags (rather than bioplastics) dedicated to collecting water or whether to allow, alternatively, whether the use of shopping bag. The survey, "concludes Zanardi," essentially sought to bring
public attention the issue of collection diff erenc of organic waste that is doing a slight decrease on the quality (presence of traditional plastic) and therefore has
need to be promoted again.
As a consortium, our awareness message is addressed not only to the individual citizen who manages its refinancing used within
home, but also to areas of great restaurants (school canteens, hospitals, festivals, parties, etc.) from the originators of important
quantities of organic waste, if collected with suitable containers (paper bags or compostable bioplastics) are a
the commodity fl ow of materials very pure and ideal for the production of quality compost soil.

The phases of the trial
The sample consisted of a mixture of paper bags for bread and fruit, and shopping bags printed with virgin fiber and recycled paper handles.
The samples were provided by the Italian producers belonging to the Group of specialization shopping bags that is located within adAssografi us [www.assografi ci.it]. The tests were performed in parallel
laboratory and field. The test "to determine the biodegradability in compost" was conducted in the laboratory from the Experimental Station paper, cardboard and paper pulp in Milan, while the Italian Composters Consortium has eff ETTU test Disintegrability field at an industrial composting. In the following, we report, in summary, the methods and results of tests conducted.

The degradation test
The test consists in evaluating the complete transformation of the test material (in paper bags for shopping) into carbon dioxide and water by micro-organisms present in the composting environment.
The sample, fi commonly crushed and was dispersed in mature compost (dry weight ratio 1:6) and placed in a 3 liter reactor continuously aerated with air humidification  Cata and incubated at 8 ° C.

Tests were set up in triplicate: for both the sample (2 g  ground into particles smaller than 1 mm) for both reactors containing only compost (blank) and pure cellulose (Avicel Merck, reference is completely biodegradable) .
At regular intervals, was determined the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air output from the reactors and, according to this, it was appropriate to calculate the percentage of biodegradable material by microorganisms with respect to time of incubation.
The material in question to be declared completely biodegradable, must reach the fi ne a transformation of the test at least 90 in carbon dioxide and water. Specifically, the CO, the sample after 46 days of incubation, was biodegradable in compost maturity, reaching an average value of biodegradation exceeding 90.
test Disintegrability
The planned method for determining the Disintegrability was implemented by CIC, which has prepared the implementation of full-scale test at a facility must also demonstrate that the artifact is not present tested negative eff ects on the process of treatment or quality dell'ammendante tion fi. For this purpose were monitored process parameters such as temperature and humidity of the mass and the fi ne of the test were conducted for laboratory analysis of the mixture (containing heavy metals, nitrogen, moisture, pH, etc. pathogens. ).
